Common use
Ranexa is used to treat chronic angina (chest pain) by improving blood flow to help the heart work more efficiently. Ranolazine works differently from other angina medications by affecting sodium and calcium movement in the heart muscle cells.
Dosage and direction
Take Ranexa orally, usually twice daily, with or without food, as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole—do not crush, chew, or split it.
Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney problems, or a personal or family history of QT prolongation. Avoid grapefruit products, which can increase the risk of side effects.
Contraindications
Do not use Ranexa if you have severe liver impairment or are taking certain drugs that affect liver enzymes (like strong CYP3A inhibitors or inducers). It is not approved for acute angina attacks.
Possible side effect
Common side effects include dizziness, constipation, headache, and nausea. Rare but serious effects include heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation) or kidney issues.
Drug interaction
Ranolazine can interact with drugs such as diltiazem, ketoconazole, antiarrhythmics, and certain antidepressants. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one—do not double up.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include fainting, irregular heartbeat, or severe dizziness. Seek emergency medical help if an overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store Ranexa at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep tablets in their original packaging and out of reach of children.
