Common Use
Esbriet is indicated for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic condition characterized by progressive lung scarring. It helps reduce the decline in lung function and may slow disease progression. The medication is used as long-term therapy under medical supervision.

Dosage and Direction
Treatment is usually started with a gradual dose escalation over 14 days to reduce side effects. The typical maintenance dose is 801 mg taken three times daily with food. Tablets or capsules should be swallowed whole and taken at the same times each day.

Precautions
Before using Esbriet, inform your doctor if you have liver problems or are sensitive to sunlight. Regular liver function tests are required during treatment. Avoid excessive sun exposure and use sunscreen, as the drug may increase photosensitivity.

Contraindications
Do not use Esbriet if you are allergic to pirfenidone or any of its ingredients. It is contraindicated in patients with severe liver impairment or severe renal impairment requiring dialysis.

Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, rash, and photosensitivity reactions. Elevated liver enzymes may occur and require monitoring. Seek medical attention if severe skin reactions or persistent gastrointestinal symptoms develop.

Drug Interaction
Esbriet may interact with strong CYP1A2 inhibitors such as fluvoxamine, which can increase pirfenidone levels. Smoking may reduce its effectiveness by affecting drug metabolism. Inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at the same time. Resume your regular dosing schedule.

Overdose
Overdose may increase the risk of side effects such as nausea, dizziness, or liver abnormalities. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected. Treatment is supportive and symptom-based.

Storage
Store Esbriet at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use the medication after the expiration date.
