Common Use
Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant used primarily to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is also prescribed for depression, panic disorder, chronic pain, and sometimes for cataplexy in narcolepsy. The medication works by increasing levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, improving mood and reducing obsessive thoughts.

Dosage and Direction
Clomipramine is taken orally, usually 1–3 times daily, with or without food. Treatment is typically started at a low dose and gradually increased to minimize side effects. Do not stop taking it suddenly without consulting your doctor, as withdrawal symptoms may occur.

Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, seizures, urinary retention, glaucoma, or bipolar disorder. Avoid alcohol and limit activities requiring alertness until you know how the medication affects you. Elderly patients are more sensitive to its side effects, especially dizziness or confusion.

Contraindications
Do not use clomipramine if you are allergic to it or other tricyclic antidepressants. It is contraindicated in patients who are currently taking or have recently taken MAO inhibitors. It should also be avoided in individuals with recent heart attacks or severe heart rhythm disorders.

Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, and weight gain. Serious side effects may include seizures, irregular heartbeat, serotonin syndrome, or suicidal thoughts in young people. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain, severe agitation, or fainting.

Drug Interaction
Clomipramine may interact with SSRIs, MAO inhibitors, anticholinergics, CNS depressants, and drugs that affect heart rhythm (e.g., quinidine, antiarrhythmics). Combining with serotonergic drugs increases the risk of serotonin syndrome. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include extreme drowsiness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, seizures, or coma. Clomipramine overdose can be life-threatening. Seek emergency medical help immediately if overdose is suspected.

Storage
Store at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep in a tightly closed container and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiration date.
